Richmond, VA: Edo’s Squid

October 2025 On a recent road trip to Richmond to attend a family wedding, we needed to find somewhere to eat and kill time before an obligatory “night before the wedding” cocktail party. Fortunately I am fairly experienced at finding unique and tasty options and Edo’s Squid did not disappoint. Located near or on the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) campus, this unassuming restaurant located on the second floor of a non-descript building was everything you could want…delicious Italian food, reasonably-priced wine options and friendly staff. But first you had to climb a fairly steep set of stairs that did not give you confidence that you were in the right place. After passing a storage closet for paper towels, cleaners, etc., you took a chance and opened a solid wood door to see what was waiting on the other side! Thankfully it was amazing…busy in a good way, everyone chatting and enjoying their food and the smell of garlic! And fortunately for us, we had made reservations. After ordering a few cocktails and wine, we chatted with the server to find out what and how much to order because we could see the portions were fairly large. Based on her advice, we landed on broccoli rapa with garlic, pine nuts and red pepper and squid, cannelloni beans and arugula for our antipasti. For our pasta course, we shared clams in red sauce, sausage, cannelloni beans and polenta and a simple preparation of penne with butter and Parmesan. Too bad we couldn’t finish it and couldn’t take it with us to the cocktail party! So if you are ever in the VCU hood, stop by Edo’s Squid.
