Lisboa: Familjen

July 2025 This new restaurant popped up on our IG feed and we saved it into our Portugal folder and we are so glad we did! Familjen is located in the charming Madragoa area in the district of Lapa, an “uphill” walk from the Santos Train Station. However, it was much easier to take an Uber from our apartment in Campo Pequeno. With all of the twists and turns getting here, I’m not sure we could have found this laid back neighborhood in time for our reservation.

The chef is Swedish-born with many years of experience in Nordic cuisine and Lisbon is now his second home. His recipes are big and bold and you can watch him doing his thing in the open concept kitchen. Our evening started with literally ice-cold Negronis and went from there. First were oysters and grilled olives followed by the tempura kale. The contrasting flavors of the smoked peppers and raspberry in the kale were amazing. Later, we had the yellowtail sashimi, caribineros, and the beef tartare. While all were delicious, I could not get enough of the Roti. It was literally the best I have ever tasted. While we were too full to order dessert, we did love the natural wine from Alentejo that we ordered.
